Snack Predator: A Slice of Life

Sunday, March 8, 2015

Writing teachers need to write themselves.
I am participating in the Slice of Life 2015 Challenge,
where I attempt to write stories and narratives about moments in my life.
I apologize if this blog post veers off the informative "literacy lens" I usually write through.
This month I am pretending to be a writer, for my students' benefit (and my own).
Writers write.

Waiting...

She blends into the couch like a cushion herself.  Her eyes slowing scanning the room from time to time.  Sitting perfectly still.  Waiting.

A sound upstairs.  Is it footsteps?  One ear raises slightly.

Thump thump thump on the stairs.  The sound of goldfish filling a snack cup echoes from the kitchen.

Snoopy jumps up, and is almost instantaneously in the kitchen, inspecting the floor for random fish that may have fallen.

Our dog, in her 12th year, has become a snack predator.  A hunter for all things human food.

Forgotten goldfish.

A single chicken nugget left on a plate.

A stray Cheerio stuck under the stove.

Sometimes a cookie still in my child's hand.

Remnants of old lunches, left in the box.

Always on the hunt.

She sits under the kitchen table during meal times, waiting for the next crumb to drop.  On a bad day, her hunt will conclude with a few licks of a chair with traces of parmesan cheese on it.  On a good day, she might get the crust of garlic bread dropped by my daughter.  And in an instant, it's gone.

And the hunt continues.

Waiting...

  1. If I had a dog...it would be a beagle. I like the size, and the personality...and it sounds like yours has quite a personality. The picture goes with your words so well...on the couch...waiting...one eye scanning. Can you tell that I truly enjoyed reading this! Loved it!

  3. I can't wait to get a dog - I hope someday soon. I would love a little helper like yours!
(Except in the case of taking food from your kiddos' hands!) :-)

  4. I loved the way you described her as "a snack predator." It's funny how some dogs are discerning while others will take whatever they can find. :)
