Kings, Queens, and Knights: A Slice of Life

Sunday, March 1, 2015

Writing teachers need to write themselves.
I am participating in the Slice of Life 2015 Challenge,
where I attempt to write stories and narratives about moments in my life.
I apologize if this blog post veers off the informative "literacy lens" I usually write through.
This month I am pretending to be a writer, for my students' benefit (and my own).
Writers write.
#SOL15

"Mom, do you want to play with me?"

I look up, and see my daughter standing below me, wearing an Aladdin style hat and a Superman vest and cape.  She has fireman boots on, and is holding a sword above her head.

"What are we playing, my dear?"

"You get to be the queen, mom.  I am a knight, preparing for battle.  Your bedroom is the castle, and daddy is the king."

At this moment, I choose to look over at my husband, who is wearing a black cape and is holding my daughter's stuffed Sealy.  He is petting him, lovingly, as all kings would I suppose.  He is sitting our our bed, which is clearly his throne.  My daughter runs off and gets her toy horse, and then sits on him and gallops down the hallway.

The funny thing is, at moments like this, I realize that my daughter is already the queen of the house.  I appreciate that she lets me share her title.  My house is a magical place, where we get to pretend and play through the eyes of my creative little 4  year old (and sometimes her older brother who agrees to go along for the ride...).  Elaborate plots, costumes galore, and memories made as we play together.

     "Let's play!"

  2. First of all, you wrote a delightful observation, so you are not “pretending to be a writer.” You are a writer! And as I wrote about my sons turning 18 and 21 in the next three months, I really appreciated reading about your adorable 4 yr old. I love the relationships that I have with my sons and cherish helping them enter into adulthood, but I do also miss the days of pretend and innocence. Thank you for bringing back some fond memories.

  4. Beautiful slice! I love how you let the dialogue open the piece and how it drew me into your world for a moment. Love how you're making memories together! So special!

  5. "as all kings would," I chuckled at this line. I love this slice- you are indeed a writer! The fun that the imagination of a little one brings to our households is precious. Enjoy every second. I look forward to reading more!
